Amy over at Michiana Weddings has been bugging me for an article on what makes a good wedding video for a longtime. I have long thought that many brides and grooms and their families settle for uncle Bob quality video because that is 1 what they are used to and 2 they don't know what good video is. So this series of articles sets out to use video clips and audio clips to define exactly what makes a good wedding video.

Weddings on Fifty Foot Film!

Below is some footage I shot at the University of Notre Dame of the Baslica and the lakes on campus last fall. I had just won a Cannon camera at an ebay auction and wanted to test it out. So I went there to get footage of the Basilica planning to work it into the openings for weddings we shot there. I just happened to run across a bride and groom and their car, so from a distance I shot some footage of them. Enjoy the minute and fifteen second clip below.

Last Friday we were hired by the Hilton Garden Inn to photograph their wonderful Fleur de Lis Ballroom in the Gillespie Convention Center. I can wait to get into there and photograph or video an actual wedding reception. We had a lot of fun with their wonderful staff getting these photographs. Below are a handful of my favorites.

I love the effect created by a fish eye lens and for this shoot I brought along our new lens to experiment with.

Outdid ourselves on this photo. Don't know why, I think it's the symmetry, but I love it.

Sanning Your Family Photos!

The other day I posted that we are now offering bulk digitizing of your family photographs also known as scanning photographs. Shortly after making that post I was digging though my own family photos and discovered one album had badly faded. This was one of my favorite albums from when I was 8 years old which was the year of the 1978 blizzard and the same year my parents took me to Hawaii. I have no idea what format the camera was at this point, it was small and produced square images. The negatives were half the size of 35mm. It was my first camera and I remember I broke it a year after getting it. Never would have guessed I would be a videographer and photoshop expert back then.

Anyone for some red snow?

Color correction applied to the scanned photo. But the photo is more than just faded, it is damaged and requires repair and retouching once it is color corrected.

Besides scanning and color correction we offer photographic repair and retouching. This is an additional service besides the bulk scanning with color correction. We can return heavily damaged photographs to their original pristine condition and reprint them for you!

Palais Royale

I was digging through the archives today when I ran across this wedding photograph from a first dance in the Palais Royale. Without a doubt, Palais Royale is the most elegant, beautiful and photographer friendly reception hall in South Bend. There is no bad angle to photograph at in the Palais Royale. From the magnificent chandelier that is the center piece of the room, to the opulent details there is nothing that compares in the local area. Modern architecture just does not compare.

Digitize Your Family Photos!

Technology has changed and we are now offering scanning services at a bulk rate! 30 photographs for $15!

Why should you scan family photos? Because you never know when you are going to need another copy. Digital files are great for Scrapbooking! We have a new product to offer I will be blogging about shortly, inexpensive, high quality coffee table books to print your photos into and share with family and friends!

With our digitizing services, we scan your photos in at 600 dpi. The scanning software does some minor color correction as demonstrated in the images below and we burn them to disc. Happy Saint Patrick's Day! To celebrate this Irish day of the year here is a little clip from a 2004 wedding. This wedding is one of my all time favorites weddings. The bride and groom were a joy to work with. They were married in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame. But the standout moments were later that night at Knollwood Country Club, as the bride and several guest demonstrated Irish Step Dancing! Enjoy this clip of Irish dance on this Saint Patrick's Day.

It's funny how life changes. When we started off as DJs in 1989 I never expected to be where we are now. In 1994 adding video production to our services was a fluke brought on by a friend who thought it would be a "fun idea". Our first wedding taught us it wasn't a "fun idea" but hard work but very rewarding work at that. That friend has moved on but I'm still loving video production.

Last month an opportunity presented itself, one I could not pass up. I'm proud to announce:

It's been a while since I posted and the last several posts really haven't been about wedding films but more disc jockey related. So it is time to change that. Below is one of the ceremonies I love from the summer. The emotions are so raw, you can tell how important this day is to this couple.
And the nerd in me loves the Star Trek themes for the processional. We also did the DJ work and played the music for the ceremony. When first given the music lists I wasn't really quite sure how using the Deep Space 9 and Voyager themes was going to work and frankly the day of I didn't even notice, your mind is on other things while shooting the event. It's only in post where I get the opportunity to appreciate the ambiance and mood of an event and it worked. So enjoy.

Credit Where Credit Is Due

Tonight I was leafing through Wedding Essentials when I was blindisded by a picture on page 95, that I own the copyright on. It's a picture of one of the master pieces created by Rascia at Rascia's Creative Cakes. Originally I took the picture for use in the now defunct Michiana Weddings Magazine. Rasica has a copy on her website, but I was surprised to see it show up in the fall issue of Wedding Essentials, especially badly cropped. I've always been very proud of this picture, it's one of my all time favorites that I've taken of anything. So here is a better cropped and color corrected picture.

Surfing the internet today, looking for some gift ideas I ran across reusable gift wrap from Lucky Crow Gift Bags. This is a pretty neat idea. Cloth bags that can be passed on again and again.

A little loud in their design for my taste and I think weddings, but then I'm a guy what do I know. It's a neat idea and they are relatively inexpensive.

This one is for the guys. I just stumbled across this site Solid Color Neck Ties and I like it. Solid ties have been my favorite since before Regis tuned them into a fashion statement. I hate stripes, patterns and there are a few picture ties I don't mind but otherwise I'll take one solid color tie any day. And this place has them by the ton.

Last night I had the fun of working for my friend Paul Chamberlin over at the Music Machine. Paul had called me to shoot some footage of him performing to be added to a demo video down the road. So I grabbed my old EZ1 which for the last decade has been nothing more than a shelf paperweight, left my light at home because we didn't want to interfer in any way with the ambience of the festivites since I was only there to get demo footage of Pual in action and crossed my fingers. The one big problem with the EZ1 and the reason I bailed on using it is that it's manual functions are almost impossible to use, so you have to leave it in auto. The main reason the footage looses focus a few times.

Not bad, but the camera sucks in low light as evidenced while Paul is doing the introduction to Piano Man. And it reminded me why I like shooting two cameras, I didn't have any cut aways to hide the camera moves as I swung the camera to get the audience, or the tape glitch that happens half way through the song. Usually the second camera would concentrate on the cutaways while I stuck with the main subject, in this case the B&G. And due to the fact I didn't want to be too obvious, the footage of the B&G singing isn't exactly at the best angle. Following the sing along is the bouquet toss.

Paul is one of he great DJs, besides myself of course. ;-) After shooting the demo footage of Paul, I grabbed the still camera he brings with him and fired off a few still shots, which are below. I love having fun with photography. Especially shutter drags, which are those that are out of focus with blured motion.

The official photographer for the couple, who made a cameo in the video is Scott Leonard from Valentino's Photographics. You can see some different photos that I shot, along with a few Paul shot, over at the Music Machine's blog.

Here is some raw footage from one of the weddings I'm presently editing. It's only our center aisle camera no cuts to other camera angles.

I love ceremonies like this, they are so fun! When the personalities of the bride and groom can show through, not only in their own vows, but just the interaction with the guests and officiant. So many churches today treat the ceremony almost like it's a funeral, it's their chance to lecture on the failings of humanity. I remember one priest who was ranting about hell fire and brimstone, literally at one of our ceremonies. That wasn't a fun ceremony to record or edit, I'll tell you. Nothing harder to do than trying to figure out what to do with comments like "the devil is out to destroy the world"... Such an uplifting comment on a happy day.

Then you have this clipe, laughter, jokes, happiness... Isn't this what it's suppose to be about! Enjoy.

One Saturday September 15, Mary and Sean had their wedding reception at the Morris Park Country Club. I was the DJ and it was a fantastic party! This was a group of people who wanted to party, Mark Blackford of Zehring Photography and the videographer's who's company name escapes me did not lack for subject matter to film as this group got down and partied! Sean and Mary took turns on the dance floor with many of their guests and very few did not make their way onto the dance floor at least once.

Morris Park did their usual good job of hosting the reception. The cake was another fantastic creation by Rascia's Creative Cakes, not only beautiful to look at but a taste to die for. Especially the pink champagne.

Since we weren't doing the video, I decided to haul out a camera for some fun and quick pictures which you can find in the post below. (One of these day's I'll figure out how to put a lot of pictures with text in a good way on Blogger.) After my bad experience with the Fuji S100 camera, a month ago, the Nikon D50 was a cake walk that got me the pictures I wanted.

Fun was had by all.

At Karly & Patrick's reception Saturday, we also showed one of our photo montages. I love doing these montages, they can be so much fun! We are also now producing them in a widescreen aspect ratio so that when taken home they will fill those new plasma and lcd tvs. Enjoy!

Saturday's Event, Karly & Patrick

It's been a busy summer of video production and while Mark and Mike have been busy DJing (yes I know not a word) I haven't done many myself. Saturday was a change of pace for me as I was the Disc Jockey and not the videographer. It's always nice to get my toes wet in my first love and this was one fantastic party to do so at!

Karly and Patrick had their wedding reception at the top notch Windsor Park in Edison Lakes. Rita and staff as usual were on their toes and everything flowed smoothly with dinner and the roast beef was fantastic. The party itself was off the scale, this group really knew how to get down.

Every 3 to 5 years or so a group of songs that are for all intents and purposes have a resurgence in wedding reception market. The YMCA came back when Wayne and Garth danced to it in the movie. Vanilla Ice with ICE ICE Baby made a resurgence about 5 years ago after crushing his video on MTV. In the last year 5 songs have come roaring back to life at receptions: Pour Some Sugar On My by Def Leppard, Don't Stop Believing by Journey, Living On A Prayer by Bon Jovi (well if you went to a Catholic school that song has never been 'out' but it's really made it's way into the mainstream market too) and the really big suprise Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money are the latest resurgent songs to hit. As I said the big surprise is Eddie Money's song. I like his music but no one ever danced to it, even when it was on the charts, until now. A good time was had by all.

When your a DJ and the party is rocking there is nothing like it for a natural high or adrenaline rush. A fun time was had by all.

Saturday also gave me a chance to indulge myself with a little photography. Nothing can replace video as the medium that celebrates everything about life, but photography can be fun. Last week I picked up a Fuji Finepix camera and hauled it with me to the reception to snap a few pics. What a disappointment that camera is, I hauled it back today to the store. As a videographer I have been using a film based camera for a while and I love film but for quick snapshots of equipment setups and such a digital is just fine and I'd hoped to have found an inexpensive one in the Fuji. In low light, even with the ISO dialed up and the flash on, the camera just sucked. In manual I couldn't get the shutter to sync with the flash, I have no idea what that was about at all and reading the manual today indicated nothing done wrong. In auto the camera dropped my ISO to 100 and created a grainy picture, argh! On top of that it's redeye feature which causes a delay in the shutter firing just reaked havoc on carefully composed shots. I should have known, never go cheap, looks like it's time to break into the piggy bank and get a Nikon D200.

Well all was not lost on the photography side, below are a few of the salvageable pictures.
